1834 Investments Limited (formerly The Gleaner Company Limited) is a locally incorporated and domiciled holding company for a portfolio of domestic and international investment assets. The company’s main activity is the management of its income generating real estate, bond and equity investments, and the management of its joint venture and subsidiary companies. The shares of the company are listed on the main market of the Jamaica Stock Exchange as "1834".
History
1834 Investments Limited was formed as a result of the March 2016 merger of the media operations of the former Gleaner Company Limited and Radio Jamaica Limited. Having parted with its media operations in that historic merger transaction, The Gleaner Company Limited officially changed its name to 1834 Investments Limited on March 10, 2016.
The name change sought to acknowledge both the large pool of non-media assets which were retained by the company, and to honour the legacy of The Gleaner newspaper’s first year of publication in 1834. The company name change to 1834 Investments Limited also underscored the company's change of strategic direction away from its former associations in media, and towards its operation as an independent investment entity.
Today, 1834 continues to manages these non-media investments, which comprise a portfolio of domestic and international bonds, equities and income generating real estate.
